Typo recently hosted Session 2 of "The Hows and Whats of DORA" webinar, featuring Bryan Finster, a Value Stream Architect at Defense Unicorns and co-author of 'How to Misuse and Abuse DORA Metrics’, alongside Richard Pangborn, Manager of Software Development at Method:CRM.
The session, led by host Kovid from Typo, delved into the implementation and challenges of DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) metrics. Bryan and Richard discussed their professional backgrounds, emphasizing the importance of continuous delivery and value stream management. Bryan provided insights from his experience at Walmart and Defense Unicorns, explaining the pitfalls of misusing DORA metrics. Richard shared practical challenges faced during the implementation, such as data collection complexity and the necessity of accurate observability.
The webinar highlighted the significance of using DORA metrics as health indicators rather than direct goals and included a robust Q&A session addressing audience concerns. It concluded with Bryan and Richard offering parting advice on using observability effectively and ensuring that metrics lead to meaningful improvements rather than superficial compliance. They both emphasized the importance of a supportive culture that sees metrics as tools for improvement rather than instruments of pressure.
P.S. Stay tuned for Typo’s next session with Dave Farley, co-author of "Continuous Delivery," on September 25th. See you there!
